Elizabeth II became queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in 1952. In addition she is head of the Commonwealth.

Elizabeth was born on 21 April 1926 in London, the first child of Albert, Duke of York, and his wife, formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Elizabeth II and Prince Philip

Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret were educated at home. On the outbreak of war in 1939, they were evacuated to Windsor Castle. In 1945, Elizabeth joined the war effort, training as a driver in the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service (WATS). In November 1947, she married a distant cousin, Philip Mountbatten (formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark), who was created duke of Edinburgh. The couple have four children.

George VI died on 6 February 1952 while Elizabeth and Philip were in Kenya. She returned home immediately, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey in June 1953. For more than 50 years, during a period of great change in Britain, the queen has carried out her political duties as head of state, the ceremonial responsibilities of the sovereign and a large annual programme of visits in the United Kingdom as well as numerous foreign tours.

The British prime minister and the Royal Family find themselves quietly at odds in the wake of a national tragedy in this drama from director Stephen Frears. On August 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales died in an auto accident in Paris; despite the controversial breakup of her marriage to Prince Charles, she was still one of the most famous and best-loved women in the world, and the public outpouring of emotion over her passing was immediate and intense. However, given the messy circumstances of Diana's breakup with Charles, official spokespeople for the Royal Family were uncertain about how to publicly address her passing. It didn't take long for the media to pick up on the hesitation of Buckingham Palace to pay homage to Diana, and many saw this as a sign of the cool emotional distance so often attributed to the royals, which in this case was widely seen as an insult against Diana and the many people who loved her. Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen) saw a potential public-relations disaster in the making, and took it upon himself to persuade Queen Elizabeth II (played by Helen Mirren) to make a statement in tribute to the fallen Diana -- an action that went against the taciturn queen's usual nature. The Queen was released the same year that Helen Mirren played Queen Elizabeth I in an acclaimed miniseries for British television; The Queen also gave Michael Sheen his second opportunity to play Tony Blair after portraying the prime minister in the television film The Deal.

Television work followed, with a small role in the 1989 Bionic Showdown: The Six-Million-Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman and, after her migration to Los Angeles, Melanie Griffith's role in the short-lived television version of Working Girl. Miraculously surviving the widespread career fallout that surrounded her first starring film role in Love Potion No. 9 (1992), the actress went on the following year to star in the similarly ill-fated The Thing Called Love. However, things began to look up the same year when the struggling actress became the last-minute replacement for Lori Petty in the Sylvester Stallone action flick Demolition Man. 1. call in sick

这个片语的意思就是“打电话请病假”??貌似病假通常都是打电话请的啊，当然这里面肯定也有偷懒的成分了。我们来看个例子：Ben called in sick and told his boss he would miss the meeting. 本打电话请了病假，告诉他的老板他不能去开会了。

比较正式的请病假的用法应该是sick leave / medical leave，比如：I need a sick leave for two days. 我需要请两天病假。事假是personal leave。

2. drag one's ass

Coin flipping or coin tossing is the practice of throwing a coin in the air to resolve a dispute between two parties or otherwise choose between two alternatives.

Coin flipping is based on pure luck, under the assumption that there is no possibility for strategy, and any attempt to alter the odds (such as, most obviously, using a fake coin with both sides the same, and or touching the coin) is considered cheating. It is generally assumed that the outcome is unpredictable, with equal probabilities for the two outcomes.

The historical origin of coin flipping is the interpretation of a chance outcome as the expression of divine will. A well-known example of such divination (although not involving a coin) is the episode in which the prophet Jonah was chosen by lot to be cast out of the boat, only to be swallowed by a giant fish (Book of Jonah, Chapter 1).

Coin flipping as a game was known to the Romans as "navia aut caput" (ship or head), as some coins had a ship on one side and the head of the emperor on the other. In England, this game was referred to as cross and pile. (answers.com)

The Coen Brothers

美国是现在世界上唯一采用电椅处死的国家（菲律宾因被美国占领过，也采用过这种方法）。电椅是1888年在纽约率先被采用的，请注意，电灯是1879年在纽约被发明的，两者只相隔9年。这就是说，电椅也是人类最早的电力应用之一。电椅是由爱迪生公司推出的，而他推出电椅的动机，居然是推广直流电。

欧洲最早处死犯人的方法是绞刑（Hanging），法国大革命期间因为觉得绞死太慢，就发明了断头台（Guillotine）。不过，美国从来没有采用过断头台，一直是绞刑。小说《红字》里，一个重要的场景就是绞刑台。

到了19世纪后期，美国人开始觉得绞刑太残酷了。比如，有一个犯人在绞架上整整挣扎了15分钟，令所有在场的人备受折磨。1886年，纽约市成立了一个委员会，寻找处死犯人的新方法，而且马上就要采用。

爱迪生觉得这是一个推广电力的好机会。由于他使用的是直流电（DC），而另一位发明家George Westinghouse使用的是交流电（AC），两者存在竞争。他觉得可以用交流电去处死犯人，从而告诉公众交流电是多么危险，从而转而使用直流电。他和助手用小动物做试验，到处展示，表明交流电击是一种迅捷有效的处死方法。

1888年，纽约州同意采用电椅。1890年8月6日，William Kemmler成为第一个被电椅处死的犯人。下图就是历史上第一张电椅（它被叫做Kemmler电椅），以及当时的情景。

is a 2007 film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed it for a 2007 release. The title is from the first line of W. B. Yeats' poem "Sailing to Byzantium".
Llewellyn Moss is an antelope hunter and Vietnam War veteran who stumbles across the aftermath of a drug-related gun battle which has left everyone dead save a single badly wounded Mexican. Moss finds a truck full of heroin and a satchel with $2.4 million in cash. He takes the money, but leaves the Mexican alive, which ignites a hunt for Moss that stretches for most of the remaining novel.

Sheriff Ed Tom Bell investigates the drug crime while trying to protect Moss and his young wife with the aid of other law enforcement. The sheriff is haunted by his actions in World War II, for which he received the Bronze Star Medal. Now in his late 50s, Bell has spent most of his life attempting to make up for the incident when he was a 21 year-old soldier. He makes it his quest to resolve the case and save Moss.

Complicating things is the arrival of Anton Chigurh, a violent sociopath hired to recover the money. Chigurh uses a captive bolt pistol (called a cattlegun in the text) to kill many of his victims and destroy several cylinder locks to open doors. In one of his final murders described in the book, he gives a long speech about causality and fate to his victim. Wells, a rival hitman and ex-partner of Chigurh, is also on the trail of the money.

Things turn dangerous when various men, ranging from ruthless freelancers to ex-Special Forces members, turn up to find out the truth and destroy all evidence.
