Ellis: Got a letter from your wife. She writes to me pretty regular, keep me up on the family news. Ed: Didn't know there was any. Ellis: She told me you were quittin'. Ed: You want a cup? Ellis: 'Preciate it. Ed: How fresh is that coffee? Ellis: I generally make a fresh pot every week even if there's some leftover. Ed: That man who shot you died in prison. Ellis: In Angola. Yeah. Ed: What would you’ve done if he'd been released? Ellis: I don't know. Nothin. Wouldn't be no point in it. Ed: I'm kindly surprised to hear you say that. Ellis: Well, all the time you spend tryin' to get back what's been took from you more is goin' out the door. After a while, you just have to try to get a tourniquet on it. Your granddaddy never asked me to sign on as a deputy. Loretta tells me you're quittin'. How come're you doin' that? Ed: I don't know.I feel overmatched. I always figured when I got older, God would sort of come into my life in some way. He didn't. I don't blame him. If I was him I'd have the same opinion about me that he does. Ellis: You don't know what he thinks. I sent Uncle Mac's thumb-buster and badge over to the Rangers. Put up in a museum. Your daddy ever tell you how Uncle Mac come to his reward? Gunned down on his own porch over in Hudspeth County. Seven or eight of 'em come up to here. Wantin' this and wantin' that. Uncle Mac went back in the house and got the shotgun, they was way ahead of him. Shot him in the doorway. Aunt Ella came out and tried to stop the bleedin'. Uncle Mac all the while tryin' to get that shotgun. They just sat there on their horses watchin' him die. After a while, one of 'em says somethin in Injun and they all turned and left out. Well, Uncle Mac knew the score even if Aunt Ella didn't. Shot through the left lung. And that was that. As they say. Ed: When did he die? Ellis: 1909. Ed: No, I mean was it right away or in the night or when was it? Ellis: I believe it's that night. She buried him the next mornin'. Diggin' in that hard old caliche. What you got ain't nothin new. This country is hard on people. You can't stop what's comin'. Ain't all waitin' on you. That's vanity. 妙语佳句,活学活用 1. keep up on 这个片语也写作keep up with,意思是“to stay informed保持信息灵通”,比如:Ann and I haven't seen each other since college, but we keep up through our annual Christmas letters. 2. I feel overmatched. 3. thumb-buster A single action revolver (左轮手枪), so named because the hammer must be cocked by the shooter's thumb each time the weapon is fired. 4. all the while 这个片语也写作all the time,意思是“throughout a specific period在某段时间内”,例如:All the time the music was playing she tapped her foot. 5. know the score 这个片语的另一个变体是know what's what,我们可以很容易理解它的意思,就是“understand what is happening; be familiar with the real story or the full situation了解状况”,例如:It will take the new legislators some time to know the score. Born: 15 September 1946 Birthplace: San Saba, Texas Best Known As: Craggy-faced star of Men in Black Tommy Lee Jones won an Oscar for his supporting role in The Fugitive (1993), and got just as much attention as the movie's star, Harrison Ford. After that came leading roles in Oliver Stone's Heaven and Earth (1993), Cobb (1994), The Client (1994, with Susan Sarandon) and Men in Black (1997, with Will Smith). Jones grew up in Texas, studied English at Harvard (where he roomed with Al Gore) and started his career on the stage. He got into the movies, debuting in 1970's Love Story. He worked steadily in the movies in character roles, and in 1982 won an Emmy for the TV movie of Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song. In the '80s his roles got bigger and better, and his supporting role in JFK (1991) earned him an Oscar nomination. His turn as the worried dad of an American soldier in In the Valley of Elah (2007) brought him another Oscar nomination (his first for a leading role). Jones's other movies include Coal Miner's Daughter (1980, starring Sissy Spacek), Space Cowboys (2000, with Clint Eastwood), The Missing (2003, with Cate Blanchett) and the Coen brothers' 2007 film version of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men. I'd never set eyes on such a beautiful gown. 2. John is not cut out for cook. 3. The two of us argued a year - who got the house, the furniture, the car? But our lawyers finally cut a deal which we both thought was fair. So at last everything is settled. |

Don't worry. I'm not the man that's after you. Llewellyn: I know that. I've seen him. Wells: You've seen him? And you're not dead. Llewellyn: Is this guy supposed to be the ultimate badass? Wells: No, I don't think that's how I'd describe him. Llewellyn: How would you describe him? Wells: I guess I'd say... he doesn't have a sense of humor. His name is Chigurh. Llewellyn: Sugar? Wells: Chigurh. Anton Chigurh. You know how he found you? Llewellyn: Yeah. I know how he found me. Wells: It's called a transponder. Llewellyn: I know what it is. He won't find me again. Wells: Not that way. Llewellyn: Not any way. Wells: Took me about three hours. Llewellyn: Yeah, well, I've been immobile. Wells: No. You don't understand. What do you do? Llewellyn: I'm retired. Wells: What did you do? Llewellyn: Welder. Wells: Acetylene? Mig? Tig? Llewellyn: Any of it. If it can be welded, I can weld it. Wells: Cast iron? Llewellyn: Yes. Wells: I don't mean braze. Llewellyn: I didn't say braze. Wells: Pot metal? Llewellyn: What did I say? Wells: Were you in Nam? Llewellyn: Yeah. I was in Nam. Wells: So was I. Llewellyn: So what does that make me, your buddy? Wells: Look, you gotta give me this money. I got no other reason to protect you. Llewellyn: It's too late. I spent it. About a million and a half on whores and whiskey and the rest of it I just sort ofblew it here. Wells: How do you know he's not on his way to Odessa? Llewellyn: Why would he go to Odessa? Wells: To kill your wife. Llewellyn: Maybe he's the one who needs to be worried. About me. Wells: He isn't. You're not cut out for this. You're just a guy who happened to find those vehicles. I'm across the river. Hotel Eagle. Carson Wells. Call me when you've had enough. I can even let you keep a little of the money. Llewellyn: If I was into cutting deals, why wouldn't I just deal with this guy Chigurh? Wells: Oh. No. You don't understand. You can't make a deal with him. Even if you gave him the money back, he'd still kill you just for inconvenience in him. He's a peculiar man. Might even say he has principles. Principles that transcend money or drugs or anything like that. He's not like you. He's not even like me. Llewellyn: He doesn’t talk as much as you, I give him points for that. 妙语佳句,活学活用 1. clap eyes on 这个片语也写作“lay / set eyes on”,意思是“看到”,例如:As soon as I laid eyes on him I knew he would be perfect for the lead in our play. He blew me to a sumptuous dinner. 4. cut out 这个片语在这里的意思是“suited or fitted by nature 适宜,适合”,比如:Dean's not cut out for lexicography. The administration is hoping to cut a deal with Japan. 文化面面观 奥斯卡奖得主 Javier Bardem Born: 1 March 1969 Birthplace: Las Palmas, Canary Islands Best Known As: The really, really bad guy in No Country For Old Men Spanish actor Javier Bardem won an Oscar as best supporting actor for his role in the 2007 drama No Country For Old Men. Raised in a family of actors and filmmakers, Bardem was a child actor who grew up in Madrid and appeared on Spanish television throughout his teen years. In films his breakout role came in 1992's Jamón, jamón (with young Penelope Cruz), and over the next decade he earned praise for his versatility and his strong performances in the films Boca a boca (1995), Carne trémula (1997) and Segunde piel (1999). His portrayal of a tortured Cuban writer in Before Night Falls (2000) brought him an Oscar nomination, the first ever for an actor from Spain. Alternately brawny and sensitive, Bardem works mostly in European films, but his turn as a composed and persistent killer in No Country For Old Men, the Coen brothers' film version of the Cormac McCarthy novel, brought him international praise and made him a genuine movie star. The baby cried all the way home. 2. She'll raise hell when she sees what your rabbit has done to her garden. |

Chigurh: With what? Man: With anything? Chigurh: Is that what you're asking me? Is there something wrong with anything? Man: Will there be anything else? Chigurh: You already asked me that. Man: Well... I need to see about closing. Chigurh: See about closing. Man: Yessir. Chigurh: What time do you close? Man: Now. We close now. Chigurh: Now is not a time. What time do you close? Man: Generally around dark. At dark. Chigurh: You don't know what you're talking about, do you? Man: Sir? Chigurh: I said you don't know what you're talking about. What time do you go to bed? Man: Sir? Chigurh: You're a bit deaf, aren't you? I said what time do you go to bed? Man: Somewhere around 9:30. I'd say around 9:30. Chigurh: I could come back then. Man: Why would you be coming back? We'd be closed. Chigurh: Yeah. You said that. Man: Well... I got to close now. Chigurh: You live in that house out back? Man: Yes I do. Chigurh: You lived here all your life? Man: This is my wife's father's place. Originally. Chigurh: You married into it. Man: We lived in Temple Texas for many years. Raised a family there. In Temple. We come out here about four years ago. Chigurh: You married into it. Man: If that's the way you wanna put it. Chigurh: I don't have some way to put it. That's the way it is. What's the most you've ever lost in a coin toss? Man: Sir? Chigurh: The most you ever lost in a coin toss. Man: I don't know. I couldn't say. Chigurh: Call it. Man: Call it? Chigurh: Yes. Man: For what? Chigurh: Just call it. Man: Well, we need to know what we're calling it for here. Chigurh: You need to call it. I can't call it for you. It wouldn't be fair. Man: I didn't put nothing up. Chigurh: Yes, you did. You've been putting it up your whole life. You just didn't know it. You know what date is on this coin? Man: No. Chigurh: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it. Man: Look... I need to know what I stand to win. Chigurh: Everything. How's that? You stand to win everything. Call it. Man: Alright. Heads then. Chigurh: Well done. 妙语佳句,活学活用 1. pass one's time 有个片语叫做 pass the time of the day,意思是“打招呼,寒暄”。 3. If that's the way you wanna put it. 5. I didn't put nothing up. 6. heads or tails Head
A denarius by Maximinus. Coin flipping or coin tossing is the practice of throwing a coin in the air to resolve a dispute between two parties or otherwise choose between two alternatives. Coin flipping is based on pure luck, under the assumption that there is no possibility for strategy, and any attempt to alter the odds (such as, most obviously, using a fake coin with both sides the same, and or touching the coin) is considered cheating. It is generally assumed that the outcome is unpredictable, with equal probabilities for the two outcomes. The historical origin of coin flipping is the interpretation of a chance outcome as the expression of divine will. A well-known example of such divination (although not involving a coin) is the episode in which the prophet Jonah was chosen by lot to be cast out of the boat, only to be swallowed by a giant fish (Book of Jonah, Chapter 1). Coin flipping as a game was known to the Romans as "navia aut caput" (ship or head), as some coins had a ship on one side and the head of the emperor on the other. In England, this game was referred to as cross and pile. (You've been putting it up your whole life. You just didn't know it.)”,而他不过是决定了时间和死法而已。 1. I don't have some way to put it. That's the way it is. 2. You've been putting it up your whole life. You just didn't know it. 3. I need to know what I stand to win. John has been appointed to be the manager? That'll be the day! 2. How long will this noise keep up? |

He built a chain of huge discount stores mostly situated in small rural towns. By Walton's death in 1992, Wal-Mart had displaced thousands of small town "Main Street" stores and become America's biggest retailer. During the 1990s Wal-Mart successfully expanded into Canada, Latin America, Europe, and the Far East. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Wal-Mart was the largest employer in the United States and the world's biggest retailer. 1. That'll be the day! 这个片语本来是 that will be the day worth waiting for,后来简化为 that’ll be the day。 The teacher asked them to quit talking. 3. run one's mouth 这个片语的意思是“to talk excessively or foolishy”,这里我们可以理解为“胡说八道,说个没完”。 We asked her to stop talking, but she kept up. The Coen Brothers The Coen Brothers are a filmmaking duo known mostly for quirky dark comedies, including Raising Arizona (1987), Fargo (1996) and The Ladykillers (2004). Joel (b. 29 November 1954) and Ethan (b. 21 September 1957) grew up in Minnesota and went to college in Massachusetts. Joel got involved in the movie business in the early 1980s, including working with Sam Raimi on The Evil Dead (1981) and Crimewave (1985). The Coens' first film together, Blood Simple (1984), was a critical success and set them on a career path of independently made movies that get as much attention as big Hollywood productions. Although Joel is often credited as director and Ethan is credited as producer, they share filmmaking duties, including writing and editing. The Coen Brothers have had their ups and downs at the box office, but they have a loyal audience and a reputation as thoughtful movie makers. They won a screenwriting Oscar for Fargo (and Joel's wife, Frances McDormand, won an Oscar for Best Actress), and in recent years have worked with big-named stars such as George Clooney (2000's O Brother, Where Art Thou?), Billy Bob Thornton (2001's The Man Who Wasn't There), Catherine Zeta-Jones (2003's Intolerable Cruelty) and Tom Hanks (2004's The Ladykillers). Their other films include Miller's Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991) and The Big Lebowski (1998 ). Their 2007 adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel No Country for Old Men won them Oscars for writing, direction and best picture. The voters are taking the measure of the union's demands. 2. John wrote me a while ago about his new baby. |

Grandfather was a lawman. Father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time, him up in Plano and me out here. I think he was pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old-time sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lot of folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough never carried one. That the younger Jim. Gaston Boykins wouldn't wear one up in Commanche County. Now I always liked to hear about the old-timers. Never missed a chance to do so. You can't help but compare yourself against the old-timers. Can't help but wonder how they would've operated these times. There is this boy I sent to the electric chair in Huntsville here a while back. My arrest and my testimony. He killed a fourteen-year-old girl. Papers said it was a crime of passion but he told me there wasn't any passion to it. Told me that he'd been planning to kill somebody for about as long as he could remember. Said if they turned him out he'd do it again. Said he knew he was going to hell. Be there in about fifteen minutes. I don't know what to make of that. I surely don't. The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willing to die to even do this job. But I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet something I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He just has to say, "Okay. I'll be part of this world." 妙语佳句,活学活用 1. a while back 也作a while ago,指“过去,曾经”,例如:I ran into Barbara a while back but didn't get her new address. The landlord turned out his tenant. 3. make of 这里的make of 是“了解”的意思,通常是make (something) of (something),即to understand (something) by or from (something),例如:What do you make of all this? 4. take one's measure 也作take the measure of someone,这个片语的意思是“size someone up, evaluate someone or something 评价,评判”,例如:At their first meeting, heads of the company generally try to take each other's measure. 6. put one’s soul at hazard Hazard 指“危险”,put one’s soul at hazard 就是指“冒着生命危险”。
No Country For Old Men is a 2007 film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's novel of the same name. Filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen wrote and directed it for a 2007 release. The title is from the first line of W. B. Yeats' poem "Sailing to Byzantium". Llewellyn Moss is an antelope hunter and Vietnam War veteran who stumbles across the aftermath of a drug-related gun battle which has left everyone dead save a single badly wounded Mexican. Moss finds a truck full of heroin and a satchel with $2.4 million in cash. He takes the money, but leaves the Mexican alive, which ignites a hunt for Moss that stretches for most of the remaining novel. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell investigates the drug crime while trying to protect Moss and his young wife with the aid of other law enforcement. The sheriff is haunted by his actions in World War II, for which he received the Bronze Star Medal. Now in his late 50s, Bell has spent most of his life attempting to make up for the incident when he was a 21 year-old soldier. He makes it his quest to resolve the case and save Moss. Complicating things is the arrival of Anton Chigurh, a violent sociopath hired to recover the money. Chigurh uses a captive bolt pistol (called a cattlegun in the text) to kill many of his victims and destroy several cylinder locks to open doors. In one of his final murders described in the book, he gives a long speech about causality and fate to his victim. Wells, a rival hitman and ex-partner of Chigurh, is also on the trail of the money. Things turn dangerous when various men, ranging from ruthless freelancers to ex-Special Forces members, turn up to find out the truth and destroy all evidence. The backup quarterback was called into the game, but he got cold feet and refused to go in. 2. When I got home from the airport, I flaked out in the nearest armchair. 3. This plan has been set in stone. |

Stepsister: She's, uh… in the back. King: Oh, hello again. Fairy Godmother. Charming. Godmother: You'd better have a good reason for dragging us down here , Harold. King: Well, I'm afraid Fiona isn't really...warming up toPrince Charming. Charming:FYI, not my fault. Godmother: No, of course it's not, dear. Charming: I mean how charming can I be when I have to pretend I'm that dreadful ogre? King: No, no, it's nobody's fault. Perhaps it's best if we just call the whole thing off ,ok? Godmother and Prince Charming: What? King: I mean, you can't force someone to fall in love! Godmother: I beg to differ . I do it all the time! Have Fiona drink this and she'll fall in love with the first man she kisses, which will be Charming. King: Umm… no. Godmother: What did you say? King: I can't. I won't do it. Godmother: Oh, yes, you will. If you remember, I helped you with your happily ever after, and I can take it away just as easily. Is that what you want? Is it? It was he who dragged me down here." 2. warm up to 很多情况下,在说英文的时候,虽然意思表达出来了,但我们的表达总是很生硬。 I'm afraid I don't like you." I'm afraid I 'm not quite warming up to you." 3.F.Y.I.=for your information 和a.s.a.p. F.Y.I., you don't have to come tomorrow!"除此之外,还有一些常用的缩写形式: a.k.a.=also known as(也可以称为) T.G.I.F.=thank God it's Friday 4. 比如:"取消会议"就是"call off the meeting。" I don't agree with you."或 "I totally disagree." 那怎么样表达才更好些呢?"I beg to differ."或是 "You must be joking." No one under XXI is served: A sign on the bar that says "Over 21 Only" or "No Students" and an instruction to the bartender to ask for proof of age whenever there is any doubt that an individual is 21; The legal minimum drinking age in this country is 18. But now, Half a dozen pubs in a relatively small area on the outskirts have a traditionally young clientele, especially in the 18-21 age group, and they get the problems often associated with that age group, including a lot of underage drinking. Now, some of the "problem" pubs suddenly raise their minimum age limit to 21, thus instantly eradicating most of their problems. And that's why in some places in the United States, some bars put up the sign "No one is served under 21". |

And I had house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Mama always said dying was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest is doing just fine .He's about to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth everyday. I 'm teachin' him how to play ping pong. We fish a lot, and every night we read a book. He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him. I am. He even wrote you a letter. He says I can't read it. It's Forrest's so I'll just leave it here for you. Jenny, I don't know if mama was right or if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all just floating around accidental like on a breeze but I think that maybe it's both. Maybe both are happening at the same time. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away.
(later) Forrest: Here's your bus. OK. Hey, I know this. Little Forrest: I'm going to show that for show-and-tell because grandma used to read it to you. Forrest: My favorite book. OK. Here you go. Hey, Forrest, I want to tell you I love you. Little Forrest: I love you too, daddy. Forrest: I'll be right here when you get back. Dorothy: You understand that this is the bus to the school now, don't you? Little Forrest: Of course, and you're Dorathy Harris, and I am Forrest Gump. 1. Little Forrest is doing just fine: 这句话的意思是小阿甘一切都好,这句话虽然简单可是中国同学很少使用,其实我们每次见面问好时都常说how are you doing 答案就可以是I am doing fine。 He brushed an old friend off. 3. I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all just floating around accidental like on a breeze这是阿甘对整部电影的一个总结,首先是丹中尉认为的一切都是命中注定,他就该战死沙场。

Forrest: I thought I was going back to Vietnam but instead they decided the best way for me to fight the communists was to play ping pong. So I was in the special services, traveling around the country, cheering up all those wounded veterans and showin' how to play ping pong. I was so good that some years later, the army decide that I should be on the All-American Ping Pong Team. I was the first American to visit the land of China in like a million years or something like that. Somebody said would peace is in our hands. But all I did was play ping pong. When I got home, I was a national celebrity. Famous even than Captain kangaroo . TV Host: Here he is, Forrest Gump, right here. Forrest Gump, John Lennon. John: Welcome home. TV Host: Can you tell us, what was China like? Forrest: In the land of China. People hardly got nothin'at all. John: No possessions? Forrest: And in China, they never go to church. John: No religion, too. TV Host: Wow. It's hard to imagine. John: Well, it's easy if you try, Dick. Forrest: Some years later, that nice young man from England was on his way home to see his little boy, and was signing some autographs, for no particular reason at all, somebody shot him. 1.That's one small step for man, are giant leaps for mankind...:阿姆斯特朗登月时说的第一句话,标志人类里程碑的这句话意思是指他迈出的这一小步却是人类的一个巨大飞跃. I am even famous than Neil Amstrong
Neil Armstrong Commander of the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission, Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. An aeronautical pioneer, Armstrong also took part in the first in-space docking of two vehicles. He was the first civilian to enter NASA's astronaut program. Mao Zetong shook hands with Richard Nixon Nixon Visits China Chinese leader Mao Zedong, left, greets United States president Richard Nixon in February 1972. Nixon's visit to China improved relations between the two countries and helped reestablish trade that had ceased two decades earlier. John Lennon and Yoko Ono John Lennon and Yoko Ono British musician John Lennon originally gained fame for his singing and songwriting with the Beatles during the 1960s. After the breakup of the band in 1970, he pursued a solo career, writing and performing songs that advocated peace. He is pictured here with his wife, Japanese conceptual artist Yoko Ono. Bully1: Hey, dummy! Are you dumb or just plain stupid? Forrest: Look, I'm Forrest Gump. Little Jenny: Just run away, Forrest, Run, Forrest. Run away, Hurry! Bully2: Get the bikes. Hurry up. Bully1: Look out, dummy, here we come,we're gonna get you! Little Jenny: Run, Forrest. Run, Forrest. Bully1: Come back here, you! Little Jenny: Run, Forrest, Run! Forrest: Now, You wouldn't believe it if I told you. But I can run like the wind blows . From that day on, if I was going somewhere, I was runny! Man in store: That boy sure is a running fool. Forrest: Now, how I told you that Jenny never seemed to want to go home? Well she lived in a house that was as old as Alabama. Her mama had gone up to heaven when she five and her daddy was some kind of a farmer. Gump: ( knock on the door) Jenny? Forrest: He was a very loving man. He was always Kissin' and touchin' her and her sisters. And then this one time. Jenny wasn't on the bus to go to school. Gump: Jenny, why didn't you come to school today? Little Jenny: Shh! Daddy's taking a nap. Father: Jenny! Little Jenny: C'mon! Father: Jenny! Where'd you run to? You'd better get back here, girl. Jenny? Little Jenny: Pray with me, Forrest. Pray with me. Dear God, make me a bird, so I can fly far, far far away from here. Dear God, make me a bird... Forrest: Mama always said that God is mysterious. He didn't turn Jenny into a bird that day. Instead,he had the police say that Jenny didn't have to stay in that house no more. She went to live with her grandma, just over on Greek more Ave. Which made me happy 'cause she was so close. Some nights, Jenny would sneak out and come on over to my house, just 'cause she said she was scared of what? I don't know, but I think it was her grandma's dog. He was a mean dog. Anyway, Jenny and me was best friends all the way up through high school. 1. We're gonna get you! Gonna是going to 的缩读,另外get you 连读后发生同化。 2. I can run like the wind blows:我可以跑的跟风一样快。 4. He had the police say that Jenny didn't have to stay in that house no more。 I ain't know nothing! He sneaks candy into mouth(偷偷地把糖塞进嘴巴). Kissin' and touchin' her and her sisters. Child Abuse, covers a wide range of behavior, from actual physical assault by parents or other adult caretakers to neglect of a child's basic needs. Child abuse is also sometimes called child maltreatment. U.S. Child Abuse Cases In 2000 more than 850,000 children in the United States were victims of abuse. Neglect of a child's physical or emotional needs is the most common form of child abuse, followed by physical abuse. CAUSES 起因 Child abuse results from a complex combination of personal, social, and cultural factors. These may be grouped into four primary categories: A Intergenerational Transmission of Violence Many children learn violent behavior from their parents and then grow up to abuse their own children. Stress brought on by a variety of social conditions raises the risk of child abuse within a family. C Social Isolation and Low Community Involvement Parents and caretakers who abuse children tend to be socially isolated. Certain types of families have an increased risk of child abuse and neglect. For example, single parents are more likely to abuse their children than married parents. Physical injuries can range from bruises, scrapes, and burns to brain damage, permanent disabilities, and death. The psychological effects of abuse and neglect can last a lifetime and may include a lowered sense of self-worth, an inability to relate to peers, reduced attention span, and learning disorders.

Our house was never empty. There was always folks coming and going. Sometimes we had so many people staying with us that every room was filled with travelers. You know, folks livin' out of their suit cases and hat cases, and sample cases. One time a young man was staying with us and he had him a guitar case.
(Forrest dances as the traveler sings "Hound Dog") Mrs.Gump: Forrest, I told you not to bother this nice young man. Elvis Presley: No, that's all right ma'am . I was just showing him a thing or two on the guitar here. Mrs.Gump: Alright. Supper's ready if y'all want to eat. Elvis: Yeah, that sounds good. Thank you,ma'am. Say, man, show me that crazy little walk you just did there. Slow it down some. "You ain't nothin' but a hound dog..." Forrest: I liked that guitar. It sounded good. I started moving around to the music, swingin' my hips. This night, me and mama was out shoppin' and we walked right by Pitsey's Furnature and Appliance store, Guess what... (Elvis was on TV dancing the way that Forrest taught him) Mrs.Gump: This is not for children's eyes. Forrest: Some years later, that handsome young man who they called "The King", well he sung too many songs. He had himself a heart attack or something. Must be hard being the king... Folks, we're ready to start now. How is your folks? He can play folk music. 2.livin' out of their suit cases: 美国人很爱使用,但这种叫不太正式 4.ain't 是 "am not," "is not," "are not," "have not," or "has not" 的缩读形式,是不正式的语言,只在口语中出现,对出现在文化水平较低的人群中,很多人对此词较为反感。 5.This is not for children's eyes.:这就是我们常说的少儿不宜。 如果你在讲话不想让旁边的孩子听到你就可以说this is not for children's ears. Presley, Elvis (1935-1977), American singer and actor, one of the most popular and influential entertainers of the 20th century. Born on January 8, 1935, Elvis Presley moved with his family to Memphis in September 1948. He attended L.C. Humes High School and after graduation worked as a truck driver in the city. In 1953, on his lunch break, he recorded two songs for his mother at the Memphis Recording Service. These songs brought him a recording contract and launched his rise to fame. Presley is renowned as an early pioneer of rock music, fusing the sounds of country music and rhythm-and-blues influences with what was then the new rock-and-roll style. His unprecedented, electrically charged performances also helped make Presley one of the first mass idols of American popular culture. 思想火花 猫王,又名the king of rock and roll,是阿甘传奇经历中出现的第一个名人。 阿甘则总会说for no particular reason或者for some reason 。

I could eat about a million and a half of these. My mama always said "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get." Those must be comfortable shoes. I bet you could walk all day in shoes like that and not feel a thing. I wish I had shoes like that.
Woman: My feet hurt. Forrest: Mama always said "There's an awful lot you can tell about a person by their shoes." Where they're going. Where they've been. I've worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes. Mama said they would take me anywhere. She said they were my magic shoes. Doctor: Alright, Forrest. Open your eyes now. Let's take a little walk around. How do they feel? His legs are strong, Mrs. Gump. As strong as I've ever seen. But his back is as crooked as a politician. But we're going to straighten him right up now, aren't we, Forrest? Mrs.Gump: Forrest! Forrest: Now when I was a baby, Mama named me after the great Civil War hero, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. She said we was related to him in some way and what he did was, he started up this club called the Ku Klux Klan. They'd all dress up in their robes and their bed sheets and act like a bunch of ghosts or spooks or something. They'd even put bed sheets on their horses and ride around. Anyway, that's how I got my name, Forrest Gump. Mama said the Forrest part was to remind me that sometimes we all do things that, well, just don't make no sense. 1. Wanna = want to, want a, do you want to Wanna dance? 2. a million and a half: I have told you a million times"也就是说我们通常使用的'百'在美国人嘴里就变成了million。所以百里挑一就变成了one in a million。 3. "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get": 这句话的难点在于对chocolates的理解,阿甘那个时代的巧克力很多都是一盒中口味众多,可上面又没有标记是什么口味,除非亲自品尝。 I felt awful this morning. We spent an awful lot of money on furniture. 5. as crooked as a politician: 这里指背弯的像个政客,粉刺政客无法挺直身板做人as…as… As tall as me 比较 as strait as an arrow比作。 6. don't make no sense: 如果要表示别人的话讲的有道理你可以说:your words make sense to me。 美国文化面面观 Ku Klux Klan(三K党): secret terrorist organization that originated in the Southern states during the period of Reconstruction(南部重建时期:1865年至1877年的这一段时期,其时南部邦联诸州由联邦政府控制1877年它们才被允许重入联邦)following the American Civil War (1861-1865)。 The original Klan was organized in Pulaski, Tennessee, during the winter of 1865 to 1866, by six former Confederate army officers who gave their society a name adapted from the Greek word kuklos ("circle"). Although the Ku Klux Klan began as a prankish social organization, its activities soon were directed against the Republican Reconstruction governments and their leaders, both black and white, which came into power in the South in 1867. The KKK used violence and intimidation to keep blacks segregated and to prevent them from voting and holding office. Modern Ku Klux Klan: Here members of the Klan demonstrate against Black History Month in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1998. |

Harry: Yes, em, that necklace there, how much is it? Sales clerk: It's£270. Harry: Erm, all right, er, I'll have it. Sales clerk: Lovely! Would you like it...gift- wrapped? Harry: Yes, all right. Sales clerk: Lovely! Let me just pop it in the box. There! Harry: Look, could we be quite quick? Sales clerk: Certainly, sir!Ready in the flashest of flashes! There! Harry: That's great. Sales clerk: Not quite finished. Harry: Look I, I don't need a bag; I'll just put it in my pocket. Sales clerk: Oh, this isn't a bag, sir! Harry: Really? Sales clerk:This is so much more than a bag!Ooh! Harry: Could we be quite quick, please! Sales clerk: Prontissimo. Harry: What's that? Sales clerk: It's a cinnamon stick, sir! Harry: Actually, I really can't wait! Sales clerk: You won't regret it, sir. Harry: Wanna bet? Sales clerk: 'Tis, but the work of a moment. Yeah? Almost finished. Harry: Almost finished, what else gonna be. Are you gonna dip it in your yogurt, cover it with chocolate buttons? Sales clerk: Oh, no sir, we're going to pop it in the Christmas box. Harry: But I don't want a Christmas box. Sales clerk: But you said you wanted it gift-wrapped. Harry: I did, but... Sales clerk: This is the final flourish. Harry: Can I just pay? Sales clerk: All we need now... Harry: Oh, God! Sales clerk: Is a sprig of holly? Harry: No, no, no, no. No bloody holly! Sales clerk: But, sir... Harry: Leave it, leave it! Just leave it! 1. Looking for anything in particular “请问您需要什么?” Can I help you? What can I do for you? Would you like it gift-wrapped? Ready in the flashest of the flashes 在理解这句话之前,我们要先看一下flash这个词,它指的是“闪现”,有一个这样的短语:flash in the pan,指的是“昙花一现”。 还有一个短语be in the flash,指的是“立刻,马上”。 in the flashest of the flashes 实际上是一种夸张的说法,但又不失生动,意思就等于in the flash。 4. This is so much more than a bag You're so much more than a jerk! 5. The work of the moment 这是在英文中的习惯表达方式,类似的还有the man of the year, the album of the year。The work of the moment 的意思就是“绝世佳作”,the man of the year 就是“年度风云人物”,the album of the year 就是“年度最佳唱片”。 Prontissimo Prontissimo is a kind of make-up word, coming from both Italian and English; sometimes people use it for fun. If we are in a hurry, we used to say hurry, or be quick please. If we don't wanna be offensive or reveal our impatience, "prontissimo", with no doubt, could be a good choice. Would you like it gift-wrapped? 2. Ready in the flashest of the flashes. 3. Oh my goodness, you're so not a genius, you're much more than a genius. Can I swap your pencil box for my pencil? 2. I had a real search for my note-book. 3. Don't show it around, it just is a cellphone. |

Mark: No, thanks. Juliet: Thank god, you would have broken my heart if you'd said yes. Mark: Right, well. Lucky you. Juliet: Can I come in? Mark: Er, yeah! Well, I'm a bit busy. Juliet: I was just passing and I thought we might check that video thing out . I thought I might be able to swap it for some pie or maybe munchies ? Mark: Actually I was being serious. I don't know where it is. I'll have a look around tonight. Juliet: Mark, can I say something? Mark: Yeah. Juliet: I know you're Peter's best friend and I know you've never particular warmed to me . Look, don't, don't argue. We've never got friendly. But I just wanted to say, I hope that can change. I'm nice, I really am. Apart from my terrible taste in pie and... it would be great if we could be friends. Mark: Absolutely, absolutely. Juliet: Great. Mark: Doesn't mean we'll be able to find the video, though. I had a real search when you first called and couldn't find any choices so... Juliet: This one says Peter and Juliet's wedding. Do you think we might be on the right track? Mark: Err, yeah, well... wow. That- that could be it. Juliet: Do you mind if I...? Mark: I've probably taped it over it. Almost everything's episode of west wing on it now. Oh. Juliet: Oh bingo. That's lovely. Well done you. Oh, that's gorgeous. Thank you so much, Mark. This is exactly what I' was hoping for. I look quit pretty. You've stayed rather close, haven't you? They are all of me. Mark: Yeah, yeah, yes. Juliet: But, you never talked to me. You always talk to Peter. You don't like me. Mark: I hope it's useful. Don't show it around too much. Needs a bit of editing. Look, I got to get a lunch, early lunch. You can just show yourself out, can't you? It's a self- preservation thing, you see. What are you doing here? Well, I'm here to check my bag out.(我来这儿是找我的包的。) Don't make any haste decisions before we check it out.(在事情调查好之前,先不要果断下结论。) 2. Swap sth for sth “用……换……” Can I swap the chocolate for some apples? 3. You've never particular warmed to me. He's never particular warmed to anybody. 4. I had a real search for... Search for... I had a real search for...(我还真是费了好大的力气找了半天呢!)比如:I had a real search for my wallet. But I did that in vain. 5. On the right track on the right track We might be on the right track. 6. Don't show it around. Since this is the first time I'm in the capital of China, would you like to show me around or something? Banoffee pie is a dessert made from biscuits, bananas, butter, cream and boiled condensed milk. Its name is a portmanteau (合成词) constructed from the words "banana" and "toffee (太妃糖)".
Inventorship of the pie is claimed by Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie of The Hungry Monk restaurant in Jevington, East Sussex. They claim to have invented the pie in 1972, and the restaurant's exterior bears a plaque to that effect. The recipe was never patented, however, and in 1994 a number of supermarkets began selling it as an American pie, leading Dowding and Mackenzie to offer a ?10,000 prize to anyone who could disprove their claim. There is some discussion over the best spelling for the pie's name; The Hungry Monk preferring "banoffi" where the logical etymological spelling would be "banoffee", to correspond with "toffee". Other variations include "banoffy" and "bannofie". Before I'm moving, I really wanna see much more of you. 2. I came here to take exactly what I want. 3. From now onward, I will be prepared to work hard. |

King: Excuse me, is she here?
Forrest: You died on a Saturday morning and I had you placed here under our tree.
