The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day. The excert below is from the Silver Anniversary Book on Father's day published in 1935. I would like to thank William Jackson Smart's great granddaughter, Bonnie, for sharing this with me. "This year, 1935, the Silver Anniversary of Fathers' Day is being observed. Thirty-seven years ago, in the Big Bend hills of Washington, the day had its nativity in a lonely farm dwelling. There Sorrow ministered amid the moaning of the March winds. A father sat with bowed head in his aloneness. About him clung his weeping children. The winds outside threw great scarfs of powdered snow against the window panes, when suddenly the last born tore himself from the group and rushed out into the storm calling for his mother. Yet even his baby voice could not penetrate the great silence that held this mother. Hurriedly, the father gathered him back to his protection and for more than two decades, William Jackson Smart, alone, kept paternal vigilance over his motherless children. This poignant experience in the life of Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was then Sonora Louise Smart, was the inspiration for Fathers' Day which materialized through the devotion of this father and the father of her own son, John Bruce Jr., born in 1909. Through the observance of the love and the sacrifice of fathers about her everywhere, her idea of Fathers' Day crystallized in 1910, through a formal Fathers' Day petition asking recognition of fatherhood." Poems for Father's Day! What Makes A Dad(Author is unknown) God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew His masterpiece was complete, And so, He called it ... Dad Daddy's Hands by Holly Dunn I remember daddy's hands folded silently in prayer And reachin' out to hold me, when I had a nightmare You could read quite a story in the callous' and lines Years of work and worry had left their mark behind I remember daddy's hands how they held my mama tight And patted my back for something done right There are things that I'd forgotten that I loved about the man But I'll always remember the love in daddy's hands Daddy's hands were soft and kind when I was cryin' Daddy's hands were hard as steel when I'd done wrong Daddy's hands weren't always gentle but I've come to understand There was always love in daddy's hands. I remember daddy's hands workin' 'til they bled Sacrifised unselfishly just to keep us all fed If I could do things over, I'd live my life again And never take for granted the love in daddy's hands Father's Day (Third Sunday in June) The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special. . The origin of Father’s Day is not clear. Some say that it began with a church service in West Virginia in 1908. Others say the first Father’s Day ceremony was held in Vancouver, Washington. The president of the Chicago branch of the Lions’ Club, Harry Meek, is said to have celebrated the first Father’s Day with his organization in 1915; and the day that they chose was the third Sunday in June, the closest date to Meek’s own birthday! Regardless of when the first true Father’s Day occurred, the strongest promoter of the holiday was Mrs. Bruce John Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Mrs. Dodd felt that she had an outstanding father. He was a veteran of the Civil War. His wife had died young, and he had raised six children without their mother. In 1909, Mrs. Dodd approached her own minister and others in Spokane about having a church service dedicated to fathers on June 5, her father’s birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to prepare the service, so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th. From then on, the state of Washington celebrated the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Children made special desserts, or visited their fathers if they lived apart. States and organizations began lobbying Congress to declare an annual Father’s Day. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson approved of this idea, but it was not until 1924 when President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations." Since then, fathers had been honored and recognized by their families throughout the country on the third Sunday in June. When children can’t visit their fathers or take them out to dinner, they send a greeting card. Traditionally, fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental. Most greeting cards are whimsical so fathers laugh when they open them. Some give heartfelt thanks for being there whenever the child needed Dad. |

A: Do you know what the main feature the Sydney Olympics is, John? B: Of course, I know. A: What? B: Environmental protection. A: Do you know when IOC put forward the issue of environmental protection? B: Sorry, I have no idea about it. A: Let me tell you. In 1991. At that time, Sydney put forward the slogan "environmental protection", thus, it won the bid. B: What a nice memory! Oh, I know that Beijing and Sydney bid for the Olympic Games together. A: Yeah, Sydney had five strate-gies: save energy, save water, reduce trash, prevent pollution, and protect the environmnet. They tried to host a "Green Olympics". B: They have racked their brain. A: Yes. Even the torch and fuel are produced by using environmental protection techniques and materials. B: Even so, there was still much pity left. The Green and Peace Organization called it at most a half green. A: That's been quite good. It's the beginning after all. I'm sure that it will be better and better.

① ② Marsha: People who have truly loved once are far more likely to love again. Sam, do you think there’s someone out there that you could love as much as your wife? ② a. 如:注意区别trouble[tr] & choose.[t∫ ] ③ ④ Sam: Well, Dr. Marsha Fieldstone, that’s hard to imagine. ⑤ Marsha: Sam, tell me what was so special about your wife? ⑥ Sam: How long is yar program? Well, it was a million tiny little things, and when you add ⑧ them all up, it just meant that we were supposed to be together. And I knew it. I knew it ⑨ ⑦ the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home, only to no home I’d ever known. I was Just taking her hand, to help her out of a car, and I knew it. It was like… 1)You’re a hundred percent right. 2)My back is killing me. Let’s start right with the very beginning.(让我们从头开始。) ⑩ It was just like magic. Frasier、Will and Grace、Third Rock from the Sun、Home Improvement等等,不胜枚举。 Learning a Foreign language is learning another culture。

1、原文:“Bond,James Bond.”-Sean Connery,“Dr.No” 译文:“邦德,詹姆斯-邦德。”肖恩-康纳利,《No博士》,1962 2、原文:“Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world,she walks into mine.”-Humphrey Bogart,“Casablanca” 译文:“世界上有那么多的城镇,城镇中有那么多的酒馆,她却走进了我的。”亨普瑞-鲍格特,《卡萨布兰卡》,1942 3、原文:“It’s not the men in your life that counts,it’s the life in your men.”-Mae West,“I’m No Angel” 译文:“并不是你生命中的男人有价值,而是你与男人在一起的生命。”米-怀斯特,《我不是天使》,1933 4、原文:“I’ll be back.”-Arnol Schwarzenegger,“The Terminator” 译文:“我会回来的。”阿诺德-施瓦辛格,《终结者》,1984 5、原文:“Would you be shocked if I changed into something more comfortable?.”-Jean Harlow,“Hell’s Angels” 译文:“假如我换一身更舒服的衣服你会觉得震惊吗?”琼-哈罗,《地狱天使》,1930 6、原文:“Life is like a box of chocolates:you never know what you’re gonna get.”-Tom Hanks,“Forrest Gump” 译文:“生活就像一盒巧克力:你永远不知道你会得到什么。”汤姆-汉克斯,《阿甘正传》,1994 7、原文:“I could dance with you’til the cows come home. On second thought,I’d rather dance with the cows until you came home.”-Groucho Marx,“Duck Soup” 译文:“我可以和你一起跳舞直到母牛回家。 格罗克-马克思,《容易事》,1933 8、原文:“Frankly my dear,I don’t give a damn.”-Clark Gable,“Gone With The Wind” 译文:“坦白地说,我不在乎。”克拉克-盖伯,《飘》,1939 9、原文:“You talkin’to me?.”-Robert De Niro,“Taxi Driver” 译文:“你在跟我说话吗?” 10、原文:“Gimme a visky with a ginger ale on the side?and don’t be stinchy,beby.”-Greta Garbo,“Anna Christie” 译文:“给我一杯威士忌,里面兑一些姜味汽水。

Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You 是 Medeiros的代表作。

Rules Kids Won't Learn in School
Rule #1. Life is not fair. Get used to it. The average teenager uses the phrase "it's not fair" 8.6 times a day. You got it from your parents, who said it so often you decided they must be the most idealistic generation ever. When they started hearing it from their own kids, they realized Rule #1. Rule #2. The real world won't care as much about your self-esteem as your school does. It'll expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself. This may come as a shock. Usually, when inflated self-esteem meets reality, kids complain that it's not fair. (See Rule No. 1) Rule #3. Sorry, you won't make $50,000 a year right out of high school. And you won't be a vice president or have a car phone either. You may even have to wear a uniform that doesn't have a Gap label. Rule #4. If you think your teacher is tough, wait 'til you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure, so he tends to be a bit edgier. When you screw up, he is not going ask you how feel about it. Rule #5. Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping. They called it opportunity. They weren't embarrassed making minimum wage either. They would have been embarrassed to sit around talking about Kurt Cobain all weekend. Rule #6. It's not your parents' fault. If you screw up, you are responsible. This is the flip side of "It's my life," and "You're not the boss of me," and other eloquent proclamations of your generation. When you turn 18, it's on your dime. Don't whine about it or you'll sound like a baby boomer. Rule #7. Before you were born your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way paying your bills, cleaning up your room and listening to you tell them how idealistic you are. And by the way, before you save the rain forest from the blood-sucking parasites of your parents' generation try delousing the closet in your bedroom. Rule #8. Life is not divided into semesters, and you don't get summers off. Nor even Easter break. They expect you to show up every day. For eight hours. And you don't get a new life every 10 weeks. It just goes on and on. Rule #9. Television is not real life. Your life is not a sitcom. Your problems will not all be solved in 30 minutes, minus time for commercials. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop to go to jobs. Your friends will not be perky or as polite as Jennifer Aniston. Rule #10. Be nice to nerds. You may end up working for them. We all could. Rule #11. Enjoy this while you can. Sure, parents are a pain, school's a bother, and life is depressing. But someday you'll realize how wonderful it was to be kid. Maybe you should start now. You're welcome. |

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all constructed boats and left. Except for Love.
Love was the only one who stayed. Love wanted to hold out until the last possible moment. When the island had almost sunk, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said, "Richness, can you take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of gold and silver in my boat. There is no place here for you." Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you, Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh . . . Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself!" Happiness passed by Love, too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her. Suddenly, there was a voice, "Come, Love, I will take you." It was an elder. So blessed and overjoyed, Love even forgot to ask the elder where they were going. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went her own way. Realizing how much was owed the elder, Love asked Knowledge, another elder, "Who Helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how valuable Love is." |

1. It's cool.
(可指人或事物)也就是 something good or acceptable;situation is under control;being calm, gentle, courteous or good-looking;meet teen's standard. That's cool;he is cool;this is cool. Skydiving (或surfing) is cool.(跳伞或冲浪运动很不错) 主词可用任何人称的单复数 (I, we, they 等),动词可用 verb to be 的任何时态 (is, was, were, will be, have been等)。 She (He) was cool in the past. That's a cool T-shirt.(好看的运动衫) He (she) is a cool person.(文雅礼貌的人) 但是如果说:Are you cool? She looks as cool as a cucumber. 又是恭维语,是说她很 calm and charming; not emotional. Are you trippin'? trippin' 这个字,是由动词 trip 演变而来。 这个字是现在分词当形容词用,是指行为异乎寻常,也许受到吸毒或喝酒的影响,而显得神魂颠倒、奇形怪状(to get high on drug such as LSD),也就是说:要不是受到药、酒的影响,你为什 显得这样古怪呢?(Are you under any influence of drug or alcoholic? Why are you so crazy and bizarre?) They are trippin'. (= tripping) She (he) is trippin'. Mr. A must be trippin'. 3. He is a nerd. nerd (A person always buries his nose in books, but not good at social situations.) (IQ = Intelligence Quotient ; EQ = Emotional Quotient) nerd 可用复数,动词也能用其他时态。 He used to be a nerd in high school 4. (He thinks she is pretty and attractive, so he wants to speak to her.),也就是找话题,想要「打开话匣」。(to use as a form of opening line or pick-up line or to begin a greeting; try to know her or date her) 如果说: Yo baby, are you trippin'? May I help you with something? I think I have met you somewhere before. Hey, hey, hey, what's going on?“what is going on?”就是年轻黑人打招呼的用语 (a form of greeting or open statement) 或 Hey, hey, hey, are you going to the movie?(帅哥,你是去看电影吗?) 5. She is a ho. ho (a girl or woman gives sex freely without charge),也就是说:She is very loose. 或 She is a loose woman (girl)。 They are (were) hos. There are quite a few hos in high schools. (a girl or woman is paid for sex.) 6. Catch you later! (a form to say“good乡bye”) 也就是说:现在没有时间与你交谈,以後再谈吧!(I don't have time to talk with you now, but we can talk later.) catch 後面,也可用其他人称代名词(him, her, them 等) 有时年轻小伙子也用:I am off. I am leaving now; I'll talk to you again. |

The year is 1795 and young Jane Austen is a feisty 20-year-old and emerging writer who already sees a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love. Naturally, her parents are searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter's future social standing. They are eyeing Mr. Wisley, nephew to the very formidable, not to mention very rich, local aristocrat Lady Gresham, as a prospective match. But when Jane meets the roguish and decidedly non-aristocratic Tom Lefroy, sparks soon fly along with the sharp repartee. His intellect and arrogance raise her ire - then knock her head over heels. If they attempt to marry, they will risk everything that matters - family, friends and fortune. |
