You who are letting miserable misunderstandings run on from year to year, meaning to clear them up some day; you who are keeping wretched quarrels alive because you cannot quite make up your mind that now is the day to sacrifice your pride and kill them; you who are passing men sullenly upon the street, not speaking to them out of some silly spite, yet knowing that it would fill you with shame and remorse if you heard that one of those men were dead tomorrow morning; you who are letting your friend’s heart ache for a word of appreciation or sympathy if only you could know and see and feel, all of a sudden, that “the time is short”! How it would break the spell! How you would go instantly and do the things that you might never have another chance to do!

你听任一些痛苦的误解年复一年继续，打算以后再去澄清；你放任一些可悲的争吵存在，因为你不能下定决心今天就放下面子解决它们；你在街上遇到一些人，由于一些愚蠢的怨恨，你冷着脸不和他们说话，但是你知道，要是你听说他们当中的有一个明天早晨死了，你的心里会充满羞愧和悔恨；你对朋友们总是吝啬欣赏或赞同的话。不过，只要你突然间能知道、理解、感受到“人生苦短”，你就会幡然醒悟，就会马上去做那些或许你永远也不会再有机会做的事情！
