We've long passed the era where learning in college was confined the classroom. Between 1992 and 2008, the number of students who\'ve had internships went from 9% to over 80%.
Interning in college increases your chances of getting a job. Students who interned as undergrads are more likely to be accepted to business school. They also tend to get paid higher salaries.
Of course, not every student can afford to take a free internship and paid opportunities are often slim.
But if you\'re interested in learning in both an office and a classroom, one of these schools may be for you. U.S. News rated the top 10 national universities for producing internships, and here are the results:
1. American University
American grads may have more to look forward to than the average grad. 85% of the 2010 class graduated with internship experience. Located in the heart of DC, it\'s a great location for testing out the waters in government or at a nonprofit.
2. Colorado School of Mines
Interested in a career in the science world? Colorado School of Mines does a great job of preparing students. 81% of students with internship experience in fields like engineering. And, according to the university, most internships are actually paid!
3. Dartmouth College
Darmouth isn\'t just one of the best, oldest schools in the country-- it\'s also great for learning real-world skills. 72% of the ivy league institution\'s 2010 class had undergrad internship experience. With grads like Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and eBay CEO John Donahue, it\'s no wonder that students have such great opportunities.

69% of Pitt\'s 2010 undergrad class graduated with internship experience. The school\'s career center boats plenty of resources for students looking for work: career fairs, resume editing and even a list of popular internships by major.
5. George Washington University
GW students helps its students get all kinds of internships in fields like business, media and politics. 66% of the 2010 undergrad class has internship experience. With alums like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and former First Lady Jackie Kennedy, it\'s no surprise that students are eager to join the real world. 7. South Carolina State University
South Caroline State University boasts a 60% internship rate for its 2010 undergrad class and it\'s no wonder why: the historically black college has great resources for students. Many of the opportunities continue the school\'s legacy of honoring black history. Last month, summer interns from SCSU were chosen to document the Martin Luther King Jr. national memorial dedication for the Association of African-American Museums.
8. University of Massachusetts--Amherst
Are you a big Red Sox fan? UMass-Amherst offers internships with the MLB greats. Students have also interned at MTV, CNN and Disney World. The school boasts a 57% undergrad internship rate and even offers stipends for students to work at places who can\'t afford to pay their interns.
9. Pace University
Finally, a New York school! Pace students have access to a plethora of career services, like an internal jobs posting board, as well as New York City. 57% of students take internships as undergrads. Plus, the school\'s NYC campus is located just blocks away from Wall Street.
10. University of South Dakota
USD is proud of its internship accomplishments. A press release from last summer boasts student interns at the UN and the Secretary of State\'s office. One student even earned a summer spot on a State Department project in Morocco. 53% of students take internships during the undergraduate years.
